ADHD-informed therapy in East Vancouver, Mount Pleasant & online across BC

ADHD isn't a deficit of willpower, it's a different way your brain manages attention, motivation, follow-through and the intensity of your emotions. You might be succeeding on the outside, meeting expectations at work, seen as capable, maybe even the one others come to for help, while privately feeling chronically behind, overwhelmed, or exhausted from holding it all together.

For some, there's an added layer to this: if giftedness is also part of your story, being told how smart you are can make the struggle more confusing, not less, and years of masking, feeling too intense, too sensitive, or simply too much, can delay recognizing what's actually going on. Whether or not that's part of your experience, this work addresses both layers , the day-to-day skills, and the deeper story ADHD has written about who you are.

When ADHD shows up in your relationships

ADHD can it shows up in relationships and family life too: forgotten commitments read as not caring, emotional intensity that feels sudden to a partner, or the exhaustion of feeling like you’re managing two people’s mental load. If you’re the partner of someone with ADHD, or raising a neurodivergent child, the confusion and frustration are real too, and often go unaddressed. This is an area I understand both professionally and personally, and that lived experience shapes how I approach this work alongside my clinical training.

What is the therapy like?

What are the sessions like

This work combines two things: practical skill-building, often drawing on CBT, for the real challenges of executive function  and depth-oriented understanding of how your neurodivergent mind works, and how your past experiences have shaped your self-image, your relationships, and your sense of what you’re capable of. ADHD and giftedness often is accompanied with perfectionism and a harsh inner critic, those patterns will also be explored.

We do not follow a fixed protocol and adapt to your needs. Some sessions focus on a concrete system, how to actually get through your inbox, or manage a project without the deadline panic. Others focus on what’s underneath: the emotions or beliefs activated in your situation that are causing procrastination or pain.

The principles of the work I offer can be defined as:

  • Building practical systems and strategies for focus, follow-through, and daily overwhelm
  • Understanding how ADHD has shaped your self-image, relationships, and sense of capability
  • Building self-compassion and self-expression through a relationship that doesn’t pathologize your mind

In each therapy session we tend to content that you bring to the session. This may be your story of what is bringing you pain, or a piece of your thoughts in between sessions, or the report of the week. We follow your feelings and mind through what you bring to each session, watching, meditating and feeling together. Through these meanderings, we become aware of how you think and feel, and what is holding you back.

What results can you expect?

Hi, I am Malahat

Therapy is not only a method. It is also a relationship. What you will find in our work together is a space that is:

• thoughtful

• emotionally grounded

• attentive to complexity

Beyond that clinical training, I also bring personal understanding, as the spouse of someone with ADHD, and the mother of a neurodivergent child, I fully understand the challenges of neurodivergence but also know how to celebrate the unique characteristics of a neurodivergent mind.

How is this different from ADHD coaching?

Coaching typically focuses on systems and accountability alone. This work includes that, but also addresses the emotional and relational layers underneath, which coaching usually doesn’t touch.

No. Many clients come in self-identified, mid-evaluation, or simply curious about whether ADHD explains their experience. A diagnosis can be clarifying, but it isn't a requirement, what matters is that your experience resonates and you're ready to explore it.

Yes. Psychodynamic therapy helps you understand and shift the emotions and beliefs that come with your experience as a person overall especially when ADHD or giftedness is part of your experience. That insight and acceptance builds resilience and stability, which also supports your executive function.

You will find some clarity and stability after 3-4 sessions, 10-15 sessions can afford you a deeper understanding and change. For long standing issues and trauma, longer term therapy will be needed for lasting change.
